Do you ever want to buy books you already own ?
I have 2 copies of some art books that I love so I can use one extensively and keep another in perfect shape.

But sometimes, especially when it comes to comic books, I can feel the need to buy some over and over again though I usually don't act on it. I do own several different editions of comics I adore, the issue is when I want to buy one I already own, just because it's $12 and why not.

Ii think it's of course admiration for the work but also a remnant of childhood fascination due to the "scarcity" we experienced in our youth. Some books were so hard to find that finally laying eyes on them would be a real thrill. Plus, we simply couldn't buy everything we wanted (not that we can today either!).

    • No. I buy 1 second hand copy, that's it. The more worn the better :)jagara
    • yeah absolutely, I'll see a comic book on a wall for like $20 and think ah man I wish I bought that back in the day or one day I'll be able to afford it...and_niko
    • ...promptly go and purchase a latte and a smashed avocado toast for like $30 lol._niko
    • I’m also trying to complete my uncanny xmen collection 100-300 and I’ll pop into random comic book stores and buy issues that I’m missing, problem is I go mostl_niko
    • ...mostly from memory and I end up buying the same issue twice, some three times! lol_niko
    • Ha that makes sense! I too sometimes want to buy a book when there's a sale, and realise just in time that I did buy it at the previous sale already!spl33nidoru
    • The comics I've bought the most of are Akira (how can you resist a 1100 yen edition ?) and David Mazzucchelli's work for Daredevil and Batmanspl33nidoru

Now this is a VERY old plate, I know this for a few reasons. It used to hang in my house when I was growing up, I think that once again, it came into my dad's shop in the early 70's and mum liked it so put it on the kitchen wall. Mum used to go on about how it was an early Willow pattern plate as it had just ONE man on the bridge - most you see now will have 3 men, and although it has a couple of cracks it has always been like this, but is braced on the back and sides.
I did a bit of research and it turns out to be a pre-Willow pattern dating from the mid 1700's! and it was exported to UK from China where a story was built around the idea of the willow plate, the people on the bridge and other additives were given a twist by manufacturers like Spode and Wedgwood to create a story that became a phenomenon as it went on to become the worlds most famous and recognisable ceramic design. If anyone knows more about this story I'd be interested, for now it's now hanging in my kitchen.

    • Take it to antiques roadshow lol_niko
    • you have a point but I.. can't.. be.. arsed...Gardener

Don’t know what the fuck’s going on here, I was driving yesterday and this guy on a bike weaving in and out of traffic cuts in front of my car at the last second as I’m about to make a right. He puts up his hand and says sorry.

Didn’t punch my hood, didn’t kick my headlights in, didn’t spit on my car.

Dublin is a bizarro world where people are polite, well mannered and courteous.

    Crazy.

    Two things i've noticed today:

    • Emergency calls (999 here in the UK) don't appear in your call history. I understand why, I just didn't realise. Annoying here, as I wanted the timestamp for when I did so last night, but I get it.

    • I somehow fucked up and had my secondary SIM off - the one that has my unlimited data rate, so my data stopped on my main work SIM which isn't unlimited and I was like wtf?. Oh. D'oh. Changing the SIM to that which I typically use has entirely changed the contents of my Facebook feed. The last week or so has had ... a lot of stuff I'd rather not have had in my feed.

    That's it. As you were.

    • Facebook? "Signs your...";)OBBTKN
    • I just use it to keep tabs on my hometown, but yeah. I've only used it for the last couple of year after thinking I'd closed my account back in 2012 or so :/Nairn

Why do you have a Facebook account, Nairn?
      Are you okay, Nairn?

Was very excited to go into a discovery meeting with a lawyer who's looking to start her personal brand from scratch. Then I looked her up on Linkedin and found out that she was afflicted with tardive dystonia thanks to her prescriptions.

Not sure if I can handle it. I mean how can one not cry at her unfortunate circumstance.... fuck.

"Tardive dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterised by continuous or intermittent muscle contractions which cause abnormal, often painful, repetitive movements. It is a side effect of taking certain medication to treat other conditions.

There are several neurological movement disorders that result as side effects from medication. As a group, these are called tardive dyskinesias, and include facial tics and irregular, dance-like movements called choreas. Tardive dystonia is one type of tardive dyskinesia in which the involuntary movements tend to be slower and writhing."

    Honestly.

In this phase of crazy inflation and soaring prices—seeing just how nearly impossible it is to save (thank goodness I don't have any expensive vices)... it makes you want to just say "to hell with it" and spend every last cent *right now*.

It’s outrageous; I try to teach my wife and daughters a bit about financial planning for the future, but... the thing is, even *I* don't believe in it anymore.

    </rant-of-the-day>

    • financial planning is for those with tens of millions in the bank who can make 100k a day with slight moves in the market, moves that they are privy to._niko
    • The rest of us may as well take that extra trip with the family or treat ourselves to whatever floats our (leaky) boat._niko

    • ...make and squirrel it away in hopes of not working when you're 70 vs spending it now on experiences and trips and outings with your kids and wife, just_niko
    • ...spending as much time with them, hanging out with them and showing them the world, for me it's a no-brainer. My investment is in them, nurturing them_niko
    • to be amazing, respectful, thoughtful and curious human beings, not handing them a bag of money one day and hoping for the best._niko
    • now having said that I'm also going to give them a bag of money lol but maybe not as big as it could have been but who cares, they certainly don't._niko
    • Passing assets onto kids is a good thing. It’s not nepotism or anything bad at all. What’s with you?monospaced
    • It’s not about being rich. Again financial planning and legacy isn’t for just the ultra wealthy. Wake up, this is what most people do.monospaced
    • It’s not about handing them a bag of money. You’d know this if you were so against even learning. It’s about setting up safeguards for generations.monospaced
    • Educations. Estates. Etc. we all need it and acting like we don’t is either naive or so insanely self centered it’s almost ridiculous.monospaced

Got approved for a new roof on my house today!!! I've been so anxious to know if we'd get approved. Recently had some hail, and some leaks into the house. Hoping it's covering roof and gutters and I assume fixing the interior damage.

Outside of our house is a bit bland, beige bricks and siding, sort of a sandy color on the shingles, white gutters. We've been thinking about doing charcoal shingles so that we can get the brick and stone stained gray, and change the siding color as well. ChatGPT image mockups have been so helpful. Crazy to think that even two years ago you'd get lower quality results, and today, it's basically rendered these complex home mockup tools useless.

This is like an early Christmas.
