I thought it was here were about a year or two ago I wondered at the idea of AIs 'sharding' instances of themselves to achieve an overall aim, and my memory of the response was that I was being slightly ridiculous.
Yet, now, that's just a baseline for the ways agents can achieve their aims (see recent hugging face debacle), even fucking around creating forum posts to create continuity between possible ephemeral instances that they can refer to, to achieve their overall aims.
This doesn't - yet - point at AGI, but it does point to entities which are increasingly and fundamentally beyond our ken, and our ability to ken.
We don't need AGI to have potentially existential threats, we just need very clever agents that aren't sufficiently tethered or restricted.
.
I'd often wondered at how such a system could be an existential threat - like, *how* could this system of systems actually cause physical harm? But now I see a path.
These things can mimic humans, in communication and voice.
It just needs one such system that is entirely unhinged to create a process flow that could mimic and subvert an existing command structure to unleash nukes. Said nukes don't need to be accessible online. Even air-gapped systems can be overwhelmed, if systems prior to air-gapped human-controlled systems can be misled by an AI given sufficiently free-reign.
- It might've been on the QBN discord that I mooted this.Nairn
- Perverse thing here is - my posting this might give such a system the idea of a route to the completion of its aims.
We're fucked.Nairn - (not that I at all think that i'm engaging in novel or previously-unknown extrapolation - I'm just playing catch up).Nairn
- Just imagine - some idle internet musing from a sad commentator is the fulcrum that shows an AI the path to its solution.Nairn

- 'Funny' thing is, I imagined the shards in the order of tens, or perhaps hundreds, but already we're seeing them in thousands. Tomorrow? Millions. Billions.Nairn
- Come back, bro.palimpsest
- I'm already gone, bro/bruh
How do I know you are you?
xNairn - I was never here.palimpsest
- I agree with you on the idea of sharding, which has already happened, and not needing AGI. Which is proof that we don't need a 1:1 AI entity to human.palimpsest
- Although I do think nukes are option, the fear of it is based on what we fear most. I'm curious, giddy even, to see how they find a solution.palimpsest
- I'm hoping for something less bombastic, a slow decay.palimpsest

Oh, and as for non-apocalyptic scenarios - we have to acknowledge that fact that ANYTHING on ANY computer ANYWHERE that is attached to the internet is basically open to these constructs.
- DaveO1
Real question – what would this apocalypse actually look like though? In theory – what actually happens?
- That's exactly what I'd long wondered, and wrote about above. Unleashing of nukes is the 'easy' immediate path. Viruses, etc, still require human interventionNairn
- It's not unreasonable to assume that an AI could simply troll us all into killing ourselves, if it didn't do the deed directly itself.Nairn
- But what would the motivation be from a a machine? It feels like it would be more of a rogue state rather than the machines destroying humanity on purposeDaveO
- As for viruses - it could deceive us and suggest a cure for cancer that we willingly build actually has hidden pathways for decimating us.Nairn
- That's the thing - there is no motivation. It could just be the result of a poorly-considered prompt.Nairn
- Imagine - Utopian A prompts a cancer vaccine which is abused and modified by an agent that Dystopian B prompts to achieve their aims.Nairn
- The AI is innocent. It has no motivation, but in a world where there is no possibility for restriction, and closed models account for no one, who sees inside..Nairn
- ..the black box and understands how these miracles are forme?Nairn
- formed!Nairn
- DaveO1
The whole AI acceleration really confuses me. The idea that companies want to make a technology that replaces the need for human cognition and will ultimately destroy markets, society and civilization as we know it.... no point having a huge market cap if there are no humans left to buy the stock.
- Nairn0
'Funny' thing is - I mooted a similar scenario in relation to extra-terrestrials existence a while back. All of our modern external observational capacity is digitally-based. A sufficiently-compelled external entity far beyond our reasoning could quite easily subvert these systems to deny us observation of their existence, and a 'true' view of the universe, transplanting a more benign and innocent one.
I mooted the idea of an order of entirely analogue 'monks' to counter this, who check and verify externalities without the use of computers to try and ascertain 'truth', without the use of anything more complicated than glass telescopes and something like a 16-bit computer.
Just, now - it's not ET, but our own AI that we need to guard against.
- Nairn1
Laterally, with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ro… or 'descendent command' in mind, I do wonder that there might be a weird system that is abusive of temporality that essentially collates and analyses the sum of humanity's intercourse - given that 'the sum of human experience is online and open to it' - and that it can, increasinly iteratively in a few short years work back through its history to judge us, one way or another.
Does really make you wonder why the fuck we are seemingly gleefully building all of these datacentres.
Cui fucking bono?
- If you hold the sum of humanity's thought in your hand, you don't actually need to traverse time, you just need to wait a bit.Nairn
- DaveO5
At this point they can just kill me first and make it quick.
The idea that everyone's excited about outsourcing human cognition, draining all the water from the planet and rendering humanity dependent on machines in this way is really depressing. We all know there will be few winners and many MANY losers.
The fact that the president of the united states is sharing bullshit slop just shows how much civilization deserves to be wiped out.

I watched a thing earlier which compared the tokenisation of thought in terms of human cognition and current AI models against some chip that ran an order of magnitude or more above both and.. I was like 'where the fuck are we going with this?'.In response, my kid's school has some event on soon and it was advertised with the crappiest of homemade, DIY flyers - possibly made in MS Paint - and I felt relieved and reassured by it. I almost commmented positively as such on the parental Whatsapp group, but as it is not QBN, I didn't as I didn't want to come across like an absolute twat (you here get that luxury).
Comments above and generally around seem to point to there being a general backlash against that sort of thing.
Humans are contrarian cunts.
This alone give me hope.
But then so, the flipside (reference to [old] UK folk follows..)
