    Job hunt update.

In 3 weeks, about 100 jobs applied for.

Had about 20 knock-backs with most of them being instant or within a day or so which I think many were robots doing keyword/cv checks.

But only now after the 3 weeks starting to see personalised replies coming through from real people.
Got an interview for a remote position tonight with NY company.
And got a call from a fintech company recruiter asking if he can put me forward.
And i've one take-home exercise that I started today for another fintech company close to home.

I think take home exercises are a good thing for someone new to the game or junior designers, maybe even middleweight if they need them to prove something. But for someone who's had a 25 year career in senior, CD and Team Lead positions all whilst still being a hands-on designer is a bit of a pisstake. I mean, if I've made it THIS far, then surely I've got the skills.

    • Tell the fintech people to get fucked. You don't do free work, and it's insulting to the length and breadth of your career.Continuity

    News of the day...

Amid a market selloff, FoxNews.com this morning makes no mention of the stock market on its homepage. Undoubtedly, the movement in markets is the biggest news story in America this morning, so far. Foxnews is actively hiding the biggest story. The only mention of tariffs is the sixth story down. A status update about the “countries that have already folded.”

This is one of the clearest examples of media bias I’ve seen in recent times.

The thing about the market is, you can’t fool it. You can’t lie. It is merely an indicator of the sentiment of business.

I know that most of us here know very well that foxnews is fake news but it’s worth noting at this moment that there is, today, very obvious and unimpeachable proof that foxnews is bullshit.

The markets don’t lie. Fox does.

If you know someone who watches fox, this is a great week to show them how they’re being duped.

    • Your premise is faulty. A) there was no bad news to report as market was up. B) markets are the wrong metric to look at for ‘truth’.monNom

    recent vinyl finds

Well, what a weekend down in Milton Keynes, digging in shops and selling/buying at a small record fair in a pub. I had all sorts of finds from 60's Afro-Beat to obscure early 80's synth 7"s. But blowing them all out of the water was this album I came across. I emailed a guy who runs a site specialising in David Bowie autographs after I picked up a copy of Ziggy Stardust. I was hanging around outside the venue where the record fair was and as I had got there 2 hours early got chatting to a bloke who was off loading loads of his own car boot finds and he let me dig into his boot before he unloaded his wares, which included half a dozen Bowie albums. Naturally I bought them all and the copy of Ziggy he had was very clean and also a first press - with the correct credits, no Mainman on the rear of the sleeve etc. I paid him £25 as that was what he wanted but upon closer inspection I noticed a signature on the rear which (to me) looks like it could actually be by the mainman himself. As a longtime fan ( since 1970) I was pretty much blown away by the possibility of having the good fortune to have found a first pressing of this that may have been signed - not something I would ever be able to buy on the open market. When I asked the seller if he knew about the signature he shrugged and said "I dunno mate, could be, I don't care to be honest". However... I thought it would be a good idea to contact Andy Peters who runs a site specializing in db autographs. He wrote to me today to say,

"Good to hear from you. I get hundreds of these requests a month and sadly, they are all either poor attempts or silly scribbles. I’m delighted to say, this is 100% authentic - an incredibly rare find indeed. Bowie signed the rear phone box often as it was the only decent area for a biro. I’d put this signature and LPs value at circa £1000. Always nice to have an Antique Roadshow moment - congratulations!!
    Best wishes - Andy"

Which is pretty amazing and a once in a lifetime find, right place right time but I know when I go back to the record fair seller and tell him about that Bowie album he sold me he'll just just shrug and say good for you, he really didn't care less either way! I will still buy him a pint or two though.

    • nice! not to mention early UK pressings of ziggy are so much better than the US and reissue versions they should be £1000 anyway :Dkingsteven

    Generative Art

I keep lucking into little accidents in one of my tools and managed to take it somewhere I wasn't expecting. I'm at 3,000 lines of JS now and it cracks me up when VS Code tells me "Complexity is 14 (or higher) you must be out of your mind."

I keep looking at the output and thinking "how would I even do this in PS or Illustrator?" Particularly where simply clicking the generate button executes the randomization, along with other aspects like the ability to randomize cell rotation. As I describe in my longer post, a lot of this has real-time updates, like colors, blend modes, and padding. Ability to use negative padding is what creates the overlaps when blend modes are used.

After incorporating the image inclusion feature, I realized I could use dozens or hundreds of images (single or multii-selected that are randomized), and find a nice balance between cells showing colors, and cells showing images.

All the shapes are either standard CSS shapes, or more complex SVGs from a multi-select list. I'm kind of limited by the shapes that work well, so I'm now realizing that the opportunities are endless when it comes to using images, textures, patterns, etc.

Thanks again for everyone's comments and enthusiasm in my previous posts, it's definitely motivated me to keep exploring new ideas. Claude is nearly flawless for writing this code. I don't know what I'm going to think of next.
