UK is Fucked
So, I'll be in, uh ... *checks notes* ... Southampton for a week-long shoot from 4 to (probably) 8 August.
Which means the UK will be further fucked by my presence there.
Anyone know the place? Is there anything interesting to do on one's time off there, besides drinking, puking on the pavements, eating kebab, and puking on the pavements again?
Interesting galleries, exhibitions, events, and/or musea in particular.
- There's some puke art at the SMOcanoe
- SMOA geezer!canoe
- Go to the Isle of Wight. It's a short ferry ride and there's all manner of cultural shit and lovely landscape/beaches to wander around.Morning_star
- I don't know Southampton but you'll be near the New Forest and the Isle of Wight.Fax_Benson
- portsmouth has old galleons, the mary rose and hms victory (btw people who live there call southampton "scum", whereas southamptoners call portsmouth "skates")hans_glib
- (after the cheap fish)hans_glib
- like fax i don't know southampton, but i think it's like birmingham - a shithole that's close to lots of interesting places.hans_glib
- Fuck you hans. Birmingham's shithole status does not preclude it from being interesting. : )Morning_star
- Thanks gents! Hopefully I'll have time enough for a ferry ride.Continuity
- Mr. Worldwidepalimpsest
- Yup. Jetsetting to the cosmopolitan ... municipality ... of Southampton. I can absolutely understand if you're jelly right now. It's OK.Continuity
- You can get to the Hovercraft to the Isle of Wight, tbh the ferry is a lot more enjoyable but it is a novelty.webazoot
- Shanklin to Ventnor both inland or the coast path is a nice scenic walk. (Shaklins at the end of the train line over there.)webazoot
- flol @Morning_star, i knew someone would call me out. it is a total dump tho, be honest...hans_glib
- If only you were a week later, I’d suggest pop along to a Southampton home game and wave a Spurs scarf.MrT

mg33,
If you come up with a good band name, concept, style etc then you could just create the band yourself!MidJourney to come up with the band members.
It can remember all the people so you can show them as a group or individuals in different situations for social posts.
Midjourney also does great video now.Udio or Suno to create the bands music.
Use something like DistroKid to get your music on Spotify, YouTube, TikTok etc
Before you know it you're a 'Damon Albarn' with the Gorillaz kinda shit.
- Ha, yeah, that's an interesting idea. I'm gonna hold onto the one I'm thinking of and maybe use it for something of my own eventually or with somemg33

- Gorillaz was an actual collaboration, not AI slop sorrygrafician
- Gorillaz are an English virtual band created by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett in London, England in 1998.sted
- Nobody said that it was AI, it was a virtual band what you can create with AI today.sted
- It would be better if you didn't get smart about the things you don't even understand.sted
- Thanks Sted. You got what I meant.microkorg

SPACE WAS THE PLACE!
NASA Goddard Center Director Makenzie Lystrup Resigns.
Nearly 3,000 people are leaving NASA, and this director is one of them Makenzie Lystrup's departure from Goddard comes soon after the resignation of the director of JPL.
You can add another name to the thousands of employees leaving NASA as the Trump administration primes the space agency for a 25 percent budget cut.

Random idea just popped into my head: do you think people ever think up and design a band identity - name, stylistic approach, art, etc. for a band that doesn't exist yet and somehow sell that identity to a new band?
It would have to be a totally new band, I realize that bands rarely "rebrand." But maybe for an established artist starting something new?
No idea if people do this. Just popped into my head while getting some fresh air at work.
- When you go to behance, I noticed, that a LOT of non US designers make up brands and use them as example projects...canoe
- There's also tons of premade logos to buy...canoe
- Am I not understanding your question migs?canoe
- You're getting it. :)
I had a cool band name pop into my head and immediately had ideas for what it would sound like, look like, etc.mg33 - And I mean "band" as in music (not a misspelling of "brand.")mg33
- Just no idea if it's common to craft a full fictitious band identity and look for a band that would pay for it.mg33
- Ex, if someone were looking for a cool name and identity for a doom / psych / shoegaze band, if would be perfect.mg33
- Egos too strong in bands to have second hand work cut out for them
Works with other industries thografician - Bands have stories, all kinds of lore, you can never replace that with a new brandgrafician
- But you can always do that with FMCG brands, a soda is just a soda with a new brandinggrafician
- Maybe you should launch it yourself? you can partner with a producer/musician. That's roughly the Gorillaz origin story.monNom
- Or learn a little audio production, lean on AI, whatever. Easy to put your music out there these days.monNom
- No doubt, but working with artists, they were always the voice and me as a designer was more implementing their vision
Again very strong egos in artistsgrafician - My best buddies are DJs so this discussion came up already, but no, they have their strong identities and styles
Very hard to remix something for themgrafician - @mg33 maybe look into this:
https://x.com/prebra…
Pieratt had something going on with prebrands for tech startupsgrafician - A company I freelance for had a client whose schtick was creating off the peg identities for bands / musicians. Album covers, videos, the whole lot. Awful shiteFax_Benson
- I should mention for anyone who doesn't remember, I'm a musician. Working on my own thing now, called The Ageless Sea.mg33
- I could see using this with a friend as a combo project.mg33
- It's just not authentic, nobody can resonate with that I guessgrafician
- Graf - that all makes sense. Having had bands and come up with names, graphics, sites, it was for sure personal to the story, theme, etc.mg33
- We changed our name from The Atlantic Divide to Looming Lights after five years when we were gonna try to make a bigger go of things.mg33
- I was too locked into ocean stuff with the old name, but LOL here I am years later with a solo project called The Ageless Sea. :Dmg33
- I was replying to Fax Benson with that comment about authenticitygrafician
- The Ageless Sea sounds good, maybe run with it?
What kind of music genre?grafician - Graf - instrumental / ambient. Album is in progress, but I stepped away to focus on the prints I'm making and selling. (From the generative art I've made.mg33
- Small sample of tunes
https://theagelessse…mg33 - What is punk rock?tbgoodwillie
- Maybe use the tunes to generate some graphics? Or at least some videos for the tracks?
Good luck my man the tunes are good vibes!grafician - Go on bandcamp too, that's were the music is these daysgrafician
- Nearly every band or musical group I’ve encountered already has a brand identity—usually something created by a sister...utopian
- ...cousin, or close friend—that they’re emotionally attached to and unwilling to reconsider or rebrand.utopian
- Marilyn Manson had created his band's identity and as a journalist, wrote articles about the group before any actual performance. MANIFEST!!bezoar
- The Ageless Sea is a great nameyuekit
- When I briefly worked for music industry clients, I sometimes did treatments for one act, which then ended up with another.Horp
- Thanks yuekit! Like I said, put it on hold, but it's been fun working on art for it. Lots of time looking at old Cousteau books, mimicking old paper ocean imagemg33
- and finding a good font that looks a lot like heavyweight fonts that were used in those books.mg33
- migs, this sounds a bit like something that Thrill Jockey would've put out. Love the reverb on the drum! Perhaps using Slate+Ash for the plucky stuff?canoe
- Also sounds quite west coasty toocanoe

- You scuba mg? PADI diver since 1990 over herecanoe
- Thank you canoe! Haven't used Shape + Ash. Plucky stuff... are you referring to that looping piano sound that is consistent? If so...mg33
- that's the Olafur Arnalds Stratus looping. That plugin is amazing. Otherwise, that's me playing guitar over the top of it.mg33
- I've never dived/dove. Snorkeled in several places. I wish I did, and had a baller underwater camera. Have some ideas for abstract water images for the project.mg33

Figma
I've been using XD exclusively but I hear they've axed it? Argh, I guess I need to learn sigma now aaaaaand pay for another fucking thing.
Is sigma far superior to XD? anyone try both?
- Of course it's superior. Otherwise Adobe wouldn't kill XD. And it's kinda old news :)NBQ00
- Figma is by far superior to XD. I used XD for years. Switched to Figma about 1.5-2 years ago and haven’t looked back!lvl_13
- BTW the learning curve from xd to figma is really easy. Once you figure out subtleties between the two you should be golden.lvl_13
- Ya, Figma does way more, but I only needed XDs functionality at the time. Glad I made the switch as Figma has a great ecosystemGnash
- Loved Figma when we switched from XD. Now our designers are using v0 and Lovable more, some Figma, but not near as much.aliastime
- interesting thanks guys. Aliastime, are they still designing the look and feel in figma or another software and letting v0 or Lovable prototype/create the sites_niko
- or are they letting ai also do the design?_niko
- Figma is free, you can always work in the Drafts folder and don't bother with paying, BUT if you work in teams, it's gonna cost a lot more than Adobe CCgrafician
- I made the switch last year, no regrets. If there is something you want to do, that figma doesnt do, theres a plugin. Almost always.slappy
- Compressify for smaller PDFs for decks ;)grafician
- Can I easily copy and paste from photoshop or illustrator?_niko
- Yes, but forget about illustrator, we don't need that where we are going.slappy
- My biggest thing was being able to bring xd designs directly exportable into after effects. That was huge and Figma was lacking big time. Overlord...lvl_13
- ...has finally been able to do this. Albeit a little janky.lvl_13
- I’m getting to love figma for what it is, but it’s far from an illustrator replacement for me at least ... they work togethermonospaced
- Why don't you just look up Figma tutorials and help manuals & GPT questions instead of asking about functions here?NBQ00
