"...it’s true that a team at Google couldn’t decide between two blues, so they’re testing 41 shades between each blue to see which one performs better. I had a recent debate over whether a border should be 3, 4 or 5 pixels wide, and was asked to prove my case. I can’t operate in an environment like that. I’ve grown tired of debating such minuscule design decisions. There are more exciting design problems in this world to tackle."

"And none of them were in high-up, respected leadership positions. Without a person at (or near) the helm who thoroughly understands the principles and elements of Design, a company eventually runs out of reasons for design decisions. "

Any interview I've read with a designer at Google seems like an engineer, not a designer. Testing shades of blue is a huge waste of money amoung other things.

In the future there will be no designers, just a giant machine that tests different shades of blue.

Having worked somewhere very similar in environment I totally understand Doug's frustrations. He's a fantastic visual designer, and his talents were totally wasted somewhere like that. Can't see twitter being a fantastic move forward but I wish him the best.

They seem to just have money to burn, and since everything is internal it's all just work to look busy. Testing 41 different shades of blue is a little silly in my opinion, and I'm pretty detail oriented.

When a company depends on clicks, like google do, I'm not really surprised they spend time working on 41 shades of blue, even if it does sound batshit crazy.
