I'm probably preaching to the choir, but mostly for the non-red white and blues here:
After the first successful impeachment with Nixon, some hairs were raised on the American Right. Nixon actually joked with a Certain Someone that television wasn't that big of a deal.
Certain Someone disagreed, and realized that in the battle against the rule of law there had to be a very seriously imagined, fully weaponized media arm. Sadly for him, we had the pesky Fairness Doctrine.
Imagine a fairy tale world where there was a stopgap that prevented unquestioned state propaganda, like them Nazis did. That was the Fairness Doctrine.
Certain Someone later becomes an advisor to Reagan, and Certain Someone convinced Reagan to revoke the Fairness Doctrine. This turned on easy-mode if America was "Propaganda: The Video Game". Worth noting that around this time Reagan was the first to start systemically undermining the public education system. Certain Someone can't take credit for that, but it is relevant.
Certain Someone is known for his Orchestra Pit Theory, which paraphrased is "Two guys are debating, and one of them solves the middle east problem. The other one slips and falls into the orchestra pit. What do you think your average asshole is going to pay attention to in the morning?"
Fast forward decades. Certain Someone might be a long-dead sex pest (spoiler he's Roger Ailes), but his legacy apparatus still churns through the adult stillborn minds of three generations of Americans that are ripe for a griftin, be it wallet or ballot box.
